As the COVID crisis deepens, students’ mental health is a growing concern. This university relocated its counseling clinic to provide more convenient access to services, and the design team provided sleek, sturdy lockers to store students’ belongings during appointments.
“Storage space in waiting areas and counseling rooms must be considered. Some clinics offer lockers in front entrance areas… Therapy rooms need to offer space for client’s belongings, too. Graciously accommodating the needs of clients is a visible sign of hospitality and compassionate care.”

The Challenge
Even before the COVID pandemic, college students were already seeking out mental health services at unprecedented rates. A University of Wisconsin study found a 55% increase in students’ demand for these services between 2010 and 2019. The pandemic has led to even more demand, with students reporting feelings of isolation, anxiety, and financial distress due to the economic downturn.
In an effort to help students access and use mental health services, this Ivy League university moved an integrated health services center to the heart of campus. The new health center, which includes a counseling clinic, is now conveniently located in the student union.
The planning team knew that students would be likely to stop in for appointments between classes, so they wanted to design a secure place for students to put their textbooks, backpacks, and other belongings. They wanted students to feel comfortable during their sessions, without having to worry about forgetting their belongings or wondering if they were secure. They also wanted the storage solution to be of high quality in keeping with the institution’s prestige.
The Solution
The local Spacesaver consultant worked with the planning team to design Spacesaver Day Use Lockers that were a perfect fit for the space. The lockers are located in a corridor that leads to examination rooms, with locks that can be used by students throughout the day. The lockers are made of steel with sleek, full overlay doors that tie in beautifully with the rest of the clinic’s interior design.
The counseling clinic’s new lockers reflect the university’s prestige and its commitment to wellness.
