What’s Better? Indoor or Outdoor Cultivation?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have your clones by your harvest, while next to your trimming area, all while located near your drying, curing, and storage areas?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have your cultivation process all in one facility with a layout that makes transitioning from stage to stage as efficient as possible? Cannabis cultivation with a tight, organized design structure makes transitioning from different stages of the cultivation process more efficient and less labor-intensive. While you may already know an indoor cannabis cultivation provides this benefit more than outdoor layout, let’s look at other benefits that cultivating cannabis indoors creates! Two of the significant reasons a cultivator should choose to grow indoors rather than outdoors are controlling the environment and the increased protection of cannabis.

Controlling the Variables

When cultivating outdoors, there is an ever-changing environment that will inevitably impact your cannabis in many ways. Due to this, the three essential variables in cannabis growth (humidity, temperature, light) may not be what you had hoped. Issues with any of these three variables can cause growth problems and an increased likelihood for mold growth development, which would render the plant unusable. In an indoor facility, this is no longer an issue. In rooms with technology that can constantly change these variables to an optimal level, a cultivator can expect consistent outcomes in their cannabis harvest. Ensuring a proper environment is extremely valuable for cultivators in states with cold winter, as they can cultivate all year round.

Protection

As a result of being indoors, cannabis plants are protected from storms, fires, tornados, but there are several other ways of protection than you may expect. Outdoor plants risk getting contaminated through the air from many things out of a grower’s control, such as pesticides, toxins, and heavy metals. A more reoccurring issue outdoor cultivators experience is contamination due to insects using their plants as a home or food source. The most common of these being caterpillars, moths, spider mites, and ants. These issues minimized in a secure indoor facility. With a safe indoor facility, rooms can be locked with key card access, so only certain employees can access particular areas to reduce accidental contamination and further monitoring ability. Advanced security also reduces the opportunity for theft of plants which is more present in outdoor facilities.

Result

So how does the end product compare from indoors and outdoors? Cannabis grown indoors, where cultivators utilize the indoor advantages, result in a higher quality product. Throughout the indoor grow process, when set at the proper temperature, lighting, and humidity, and handled carefully, will result in a flower with a higher terpenes count compared to an outdoor grown plant. Greater terpenes count results in a higher THC concentration leading to an improved potency and sensory experience. Due to the higher quality, cannabis grown indoors sells for a higher price than its outdoor counterpart.
