Climate Controlled Storage With Increased Capacity Perfect for Seed Testing Company
When you’re growing crops for business, it isn’t as easy as simply planting something and waiting for it to grow. There’s a very significant agricultural technology component—especially when it come to seed testing. Seed testing is a huge business, full of cutting edge seed analysis technologies and a broad range of testing options to figure out the genetics, potential diseases, and pathogens of various seed types.
The actual testing of these seed varietals is one part of the process—but first, it’s important that these seeds be kept a climate-controlled storage space. One of the world’s largest independent seed testing companies, located in North Dakota, was quickly running out of space in their environmentally controlled sample storage facility. Not only did they need significantly more space, they also needed a better method to access, track, and control samples—all the while avoiding a potentially costly construction of an entirely new building.
Because of the ActivRAC system, the company was able to save over $200,000 in new construction costs and eliminate the associated downtime and disruption of a large construction project—and they were able to plan for the future. The new storage solution is able to house 80,000 samples—a far cry from their old storage capacity, which maxed out at 38,000.
Eliminate the Need for Idle Aisles
An authorized Spacesaver distributor in North Dakota was presented with this challenge, and proposed the ActivRAC 7M mobilized storage system as the ideal solution. This high-density solution eliminated the need to idle aisles and more than doubled the storage capacity as compared to traditional wire or static shelving.
By planning renovations around the ActivRAC 7M system, the company was able to build a new climate-controlled storage system and room on-site, rather than construct an entirely new facility off-site to store their samples.
The high-density ActivRAC system was an efficiency upgrade all on its own, but in using a standard 4-post shelving solution with steel upright panels in conjunction with the ActivRAC carriages, Spacesaver was able to create a clean, finished look without having to use materials like wood or laminate—materials that would have the potential to warp or absorb moisture in the climate-controlled storage area.
